Enter Ashley Diamond's home, a Brooklyn oasis with backyard space (yes, it exists in NYC!), elegantly decorated with hints of Southern charm. We recently did a shoot for her partnership with Panera Bread and I got a glimpse into her life as a work from home mom and wanted to know how she does it all. Read on to learn for yourself!
Alexis: You're a career woman by day and blogger by night, PLUS a new mom. How do you do it all and what keeps you going?
Ashley: I believe that I’m able to do it all because I have a passion for everything I’m doing in life. I’ve shed the things that don’t ignite joy and that helped make room for the things that mean the most – my family, career, friends and blog. I also have found that over the years, the blog has given me so much in the form of friendships, experiences and connections that I want to continue growing that space as much as possible. I’ve also managed my expectations and created boundaries to help ensure I don’t constantly disappoint myself or find myself in the comparison trap.
Alexis: What tips do you have for new moms living in a big city?
Ashley: FIND YOUR TRIBE. It sounds so trite but regardless of your age, background or status motherhood is a new and difficult undertaking and having support from fellow moms helps so much! Similar to starting college, these women are going through it with you and are at the exact same stage in motherhood. Those late nights or early mornings, depending how you look at it, can be very lonely and I’m so thankful for the women who I was able to text at almost any hour. Some people enjoy play groups or activities but I have really enjoyed staying in touch with these women and Katie’s friends through play dates in our backyard/porch or at the local playground. Sipping a coffee and chatting is easier when your child is safely distracted in a swing. J
Alexis: How do you stay focused while working from home?
Ashley: It took me a while to find a balance but I find it much easier to stay focused by having a proper desk and dedicated work space. I take my coffee and breakfast up to our office/guest room after dropping Katie off around 8:30 and spend most of my day up there except for a few breaks for fresh air and lunch. I tend to work best with classical music playing and I take advantage of having two monitors!
Alexis: Do you have a go-to quick family dinner?
Ashley: It depends on the season. During the fall and winter months our go-to is defrosting frozen homemade soup or chilli and making a salad to go on the side. During the warmer months, we love to grill as much as possible since it reduces the cleanup time and is healthy and delicious. Many nights we put everything on the grill – protein and vegetables!
Alexis: What are you reading right now?
Ashley: I’m currently reading America’s First Daughter the story of Thomas Jefferson’s daughter.
Alexis: Tell us 3 things about yourself that we wouldn't know by looking at your Insta
Ashley: Hmm, this is a tough one as I feel like I tend to share everything on that space but, let’s see.
1) I have ZERO musical talent. Luckily, at this point in her life, Katie doesn’t seem to mind my voice but I wish that I had a bit more talent in the music department. You know, maybe just the ability to sing a lullaby?
2) I used to overcommit myself WAY too much and I’ve so enjoyed the space that I feel in my life today as it has enabled me the time to focus on the most important things and make space to LIVE and SMILE.
3) If money and schedule was of no concern, I’d spend one weekend per month in Savannah enjoying time with family and out on the water and another weekend per month in Vermont enjoying fresh air and starry nights. Too bad I can’t just twinkle my nose and be in either of those places in just seconds!
